In 2020, the new MGEX line, a new evoluton of Gunpla that focuses on 4 key points: Style, Internal Structure, Action, and Gimmick and a new fifth element called the EXTREME Point, was announced. Since then, the line's first kit, the MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka has been released and it delivered on all its promises. Now, Bandai Spirits are coming at us again with yet another exciting MGEX release, the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam, which they announced in a teaser video.
The Strike Freedom Gundam is a Mobile Suit in the series Gundam SEED Destiny. It is the successor to ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and is primarily piloted by Kira Yamato. The Strike Freedom is a highly advanced mobile suit equipped with many experimental technologies, such as its DRAGOON System, Hyper-Deuterion Engine, Phase Shift Armor, and a Neutron Jammer Canceller. Its armaments include the CIWS, beam rifles, which can be combined to recreate the Long Range Beam Rifle, two shield guns, beam shield, two beam sabers, which can be connected, rail cannon, and 14 DRAGOONs.
What's the EXTREME point this time around? It's special processing or extreme metallic combination. This kit has two types of metallic molding that make up its multilayered golden inner frame. In the second video, we learned that this kit has copper gold, white gold, and yellow coating. It also comes with etching stickers.
It appears as if Bandai are taking what they've learned on the PG Unleashed RX-78-2, which also features multiple layers, and applying it to future kits like this one. I couldn't be happier with this decision, because the PG Unleashed RX-78-2 is one of my favorite kits to release so far. This kit also has an incredible range of articulation as seen in the most recent video. Even more exciting is the fact that it has the most articulation gimmicks, including the armor parts on the arm, the head, which has three movable axes, the feet, the legs, the torso/waist and more, in MG history.
I have a feeling that this one is going to cost a pretty penny due to the gold plating in comparison to other kits of this scale. We've seen other kits like the PG Phenex retail for around $550 USD in the past. Although, that of course, is a PG, while this one is a MGEX kit, so prices between the two will vary a lot. Later on, we learned that the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam is retailing for 14,000 JPY, so it ended up being a lot more affordable than I thought it would be.
