Metaphor: ReFantazio
Release Date: 2024
Platform(s): PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PC
Altus revealed a new fantasy RPG titled Metaphor: ReFantazio, made by the creators of Persona 3, 4, and 5 that is expected to be released in 2024. Directing the game is Katsura Hoshino with character designs by Shigenori Soejima and music by Shoji Meguro. The game promises a seamless blend of action and turn-based combat mechanics, allowing players to customize their party to suit their playstyle.
Set in the tumultuous United Kingdom of Euchronia, chaos erupts in Metaphor: ReFantazio with the king’s assassination, plunging the realm into disarray. As the mysterious Royal Magic is unleashed, a royal tournament ensues, vying for control of the throne. Amidst this turmoil, the protagonist and his fairy companion, Galica, embark on a quest to lift the curse afflicting the presumed deceased prince. Across the sprawling landscape, they journey in search of answers, navigating a world teeming with magic and intrigue.
Atlus makes some of my favorite JRPGs, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in store with this new title.
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
Release Date: June 21
Platform(s): PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is the highly anticipated expansion expected to be released on June 21. This expansion takes us into a mysterious realm obscured by the Erdtree, where the goddess Marika first set foot. The land has been purged in an unsung battle and set ablaze by Messmer’s flame. Here, Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord, divesting himself of all things Golden. The DLC promises new bosses, including Mesmer the Impaler, and new weapons, spells, armor sets, and more.
As a huge fan of Elden Ring, I’m eagerly anticipating this expansion. I’m excited to delve deeper into the lore and challenges that await in the Land of Shadow. While more so an action RPG, and of course, a Souls game, I still wanted to include this one because it is one that I highly recommend.

Ys X: Nordics
Release Date: Fall 2024
Platform(s): PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, PC
Ys X: Nordics is the latest entry in the Ys Series, and in it, we embark on a thrilling journey through the northern islands of Obelia Gulf alongside adventurer Adol Christin. As Adol navigates the harsh and mysterious landscape, he finds himself entangled in the conflict between the seafaring Normans, the townsfolk of Obelia Gulf, and the enigmatic Griegr monsters.
Teaming up with the Norman warrior Karja, Adol braves the vast ocean, consulting maritime maps, and engaging in intense naval battles with enemy ships. This latest installment in the Ys series offers a nostalgic return to Adol’s early adventures and invites us to the open sea.
The Ys games are known for their killer soundtracks, fun combat, and engaging stories. With its storyline that’s set against the backdrop of the Obelia Gulf that gives us a look into Adol’s early adventures, and Ys’ trademark fast-paced combat, Ys X: Nordics is undoubtedly one of my most anticipated JRPGs of 2024.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak
Release Date: July 5
Platform(s): PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, Steam
The Legend of Heroes is one of my all-time favorite JRPG series, so you know I’m looking forward to the latest entry, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, releasing on July 5 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Steam.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak follows bounty hunter Van Arkride as he embarks on a case that will alter the nation’s destiny and his own. It dives into the expansive landscapes of the Calvard Republic and promises to immerse us in a captivating narrative full of action and suspense. The game features a mix of action and turn-based combat with an enhanced AT (Action Time) Battle system.
In the game, you can expand your repertoire of Arts and Skills with a sixth-generation combat orbment, Xipha, adding depth and versatility to strategic maneuvers. On top of that, the choices you make throughout the game influence how the story unfolds, determining your standing in the city, alliances, opposition, available opportunities, and more. It seems like this game is expanding further upon everything I already love about The Legend of Heroes games, giving us an entry that while familiar, promises to be a stand-out with its Strategic Battle System and Xipha orbments.
