Alpha Industries and STRICT-G have worked on a number of Gundam collaborations in the past, but their new collection that's inspired by the latest series in the Universal Century timeline, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, is one of my favorites. Their collaborations are up there with the likes of the Nike Gundam SB Dunk Highs, which comes as no surprise given their track records and backgrounds.
Since Alpha Industries are a force in military fashion and STRICT-G are known for making high-quality Gundam merch, they are the perfect duo to bring the military aesthetics seen in Gundam to life, albeit in a more stylish, lifestyle form.
If you are located in Japan, you may already have items from the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Alpha Industries x STRICT-G collection in hand. But if you are located in the US, this collection is going to be available for purchase on Premium Bandai on May 15, 2022 at 8:00pm EST. Premium Bandai were kind enough to send over two Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Light MA-1 Natus jackets, so we could give you an early look as well as a review of them.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway takes place in the future after the events in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and it is adapted from the novel series Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash. The son of Commander Bright Noa, Hathaway Noa, is the main protagonist of the film as well as the leader of an anti-federation organization called Mafty. Opposing him are the Earth Federation Forces, which includes Kenneth Sleg, a commander of the special unit Circe. He also meets the mysterious Gigi Andalucia, who changes his life and destiny forever.
The jackets I'm about to review, as well as the remainder of this collection which I'll talk about later, celebrate the two main organizations in this series, Mafty and the Earth Federation Forces (E.F.F.). With some of the coolest aesthetics, symbols, and suit designs in all of Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is an incredible choice for a collection.
The Light MA-1 Natus jacket, which is based on the L-2B jacket and is a normal MA-1 jacket sans the padding, is inspired by some of Alpha Industries most popular products. One positive to this jacket is that it's lightweight, so it's wearable in a number of different seasons as well as climates. The Light MA-1 Natus jacket also comes with a detachable hood, so it is versatile as well.
The first Light MA-1 Natus jacket features Mafty, an organization that's in opposition to the Earth Federation Forces in Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway. The Mafty symbol is present on the hood, the front of the jacket, as well as the Mafty ribbon seen alongside the characteristic Alpha Industries tag that clips onto the sleeve.
Everywhere you look on this jacket there are easter eggs, but the details they've added, while many, are not overdone and are well-thought-out from the Mafty inner lining to the removable patch on the left breast. The hood is made of the same nylon material that the rest of the jacket is made in and there's an embroidered Mafty logo for added detail.
The colorway of this jacket is striking, even more so in person. The orange accents they added, as well as the orange inner layer, stand out beautifully against the jacket's main color of navy blue. They accurately depict the colors seen in the first Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway anime film, so it represents the series and Mafty well.
The second Light MA-1 Natus jacket highlights the Earth Federation Forces (E.F.F.). A unique detail of this jacket is the E.F.F. logo that's on its back, which is a nice touch, especially given that this detail is present on the E.F.F. jackets seen in the anime. At one point, we even see Gigi wearing one in the film.
The jacket also has a removable Circe Unit patch on the left breast. I really appreciate the fact that they referenced the Circe Unit, a special forces unit in the Earth Federation whose main goal is to destroy Mafty, on this jacket as well.
The E.F.F. Light MA-1 Natus jacket has a more simplistic yet still pleasing colorway of tan, black, and dark navy, but it is adorned with gold details that make it stand out. Like the Mafty jacket, this one is accurate to the colors seen in the anime and it really mirrors the Earth Federation Forces well. It has a military look to it, which I really enjoy, but it's fashionable as well. The hood, which is removable, is similar to one you'd find on a premium hoodie. The embroidered Earth Federation Forces symbol they added on the hood is a nice touch too.
The look of both of these jackets is incredible, but it isn't until you get them on, that you discover just how high-quality and beautifully made they are. The materials used are top-notch, they fit snug but they are also loose in the right areas, and they are as utilitarian as they are stylish. The embroidered details on the jackets make them look even more high-end than they already do as well.
I have to say too, being that we are a couple, one who's a 6'3" male and one who is a 5'4" female, these jackets fit both sexes extremely well. We received a medium and it just so turns out that this size fits us both the way we prefer.
I personally like jackets that are bigger on my body, because I like to wear sweatshirts underneath them, with longer sleeves that slightly cover my hands, while my partner Brad likes jackets that fit more snug, although not too snug, to his body. A size medium ended up working well for both of us given our preferences and style. Once on, you can tell that functionality as well as the needs of the customer were considered when making these jackets. I really appreciate the fact that the hoods are removable too, which is a strong need for individuals, like me, that like to wear sweatshirts under their jackets.
In addition to the two Light MA-1 Natus jackets, two STRICT-G x Alpha Industries M-65 Jackets, one inspired by Mafty and one inspired by the E.F.F., and a pair of Mafty tapered jeans that STRICT-G made in collaboration with Edwin, a premium denim company established in Japan, are releasing on Premium Bandai as well. There's an emphasis on quality, but also design, in this collection. They look great online, but it's when you get them in hand and feel the quality of the materials and fabrics against your body, that you really understand how much care and thought was put into these pieces.
Even more so than that, they did Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, which is a landmark film in the Gundam franchise, justice. After getting these jackets in hand, I can confidently say that Alpha Industries and STRICT-G make some of the best, if not the best, Gundam clothing in the market. Whether you are into streetwear or are a huge Gundam fan, or are into both like we are, the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Alpha Industries x STRICT-G collaboration is sure to impress!
