The Climber by Shin’ichi Sakamoto
The Climber by Shin’ichi Sakamoto has been highly anticipated since its release in Japan in 2007. Now, in Spring 2025, it is finally getting printed with an English translation. Given that this is a Seinen series, I hope it will be printed under their Sig imprint, which is their larger format standard release for more mature series, similar to Dorohedoro and Pluto. If you are new to The Climber, it is one of the best sports manga of all time, renowned for its stunning art, impactful story, and unique psychological perspective.
The Climber follows Mori, a guy who likes to keep to himself, who discovers he has a passion for climbing one day when his classmates egg him on to climb the side of the school’s building. He scales the side of the wall with ease and is a natural talent. We also discover he’s quite fearless because he does so without a harness on. This moment awakens something within him and he finds a new calling.
Of course, nothing is ever this simple though, because this manga is very psychological as well. Mori won’t just have to overcome the physical mountains that stand before him, but the ones that are in his mind also.
In Spring 2025, Viz is also releasing Minecraft: The Manga by Kazuyoshi Seto, a spin-off titled Kaiju No. 8 B-Side by Naoya Matsumoto, Keiji Ando, and Kentaro Hidano, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex by Masashi Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto, a second series which continues the story of Boruto, One Piece: Heroines by Jun Esaka, Eiichiro Oda, and Sayaka Suwa, a collection of prose short stories that follow Nami, Robin, Vivi, and Perona, My Love Story!! In addition to the above new manga licenses, they also announced a few new editions. The first is paperback 3-in-1 editions of one of the most beloved shonen manga Hunter x Hunter, which are similar to those we’ve seen for Bleach, Naruto, and more. The first three volumes of Vagabond are going to be collected in a large-trim edition that has a textured design.
