Makoto Shinkai hasn’t worked on a new project since 2019’s breakout film Weathering with You, but that’s about to change, with the announcement of a new anime movie titled Suzume no Tojimari. Along with the announcement, a new visual and staff information were revealed. 2022 is stacked so far with exciting new anime films, including Bubble, a new anime original about parkour, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and more. And now it’s even more stacked with the announcement of Makoto Shinkai’s new film!
Makoto Shinkai is a prolific force in the anime industry bringing us not only beautifully animated and emotional sci-fi tales like the aforementioned Weathering with You, but Your Name, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and more as well. It comes as no surprise that Suzume no Tojimari is sci-fi story also and I am looking forward to enjoying his work once again.
Here are all of the details we know about Suzume no Tojimari so far!
What is Suzume no Tojimari about?
Suzume, a 17-year old girl that lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a traveling young man one day who says he is looking for a door. Following him, the sparrow found an old door in the ruins of the mountains. There it stood as if it were the only thing that survived the collapse. The sparrow reached for the door as if he were being drawn to something.
It wasn’t before long that the doors began to open, one after another in various areas of Japan. Disasters will come from the other side, so the open door must now be closed. Guided by a mysterious door, the sparrow’s door-locking journey begins.
Who is the staff behind Suzume no Tojimari?
Makoto Shinkai is the creator of Suzume no Tojimari. He is writing the screenplay for the film, but he is also directing it as well as he did with his previous works. The animation studio behind Suzume no Tojimari is CoMix Wave Films, who did the animation for all of Makoto Shinkai’s films.
Masayoshi Tanaka, who worked on Weathing with You and Your Name, is returning to do the character designs for Suzume no Tojimari. He also did the character designs for anime, such as Toradora!, Darling in the FranXX, which is getting a print omnibus release, Highschool of the Dead and more. Speaking of Highschool of the Dead, the full color manga editions are absolutely beautiful.
Kenichi Tsuchiya is the animation director and Takumi Tanji is the art director. Both of which have worked on Makoto Shinkai’s films in the past.
