The 2017 action role-playing game, NieR: Automata, that was developed by PlatinumGames and produced by Square Enix is getting an anime adaptation! It was confirmed during a live broadcast in celebration of the game’s 5th anniversary. More and more video games are being adapted into anime, including The World Ends with You that released in 2021 and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which is set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077, but this is one of the most exciting to be announced.
If you aren’t familiar with the game already, the story is set in the distant future in a time of war between alien-created machines and human-crafted androids. But more so than anything, the story follows 2B, 9S, and A2 on their journey and all of the obstacles that come across their way. Since its release, NieR: Automata has been adapted into light novels and figures from the franchise, such as the 2B Nendoroid, and statues, such as the Prime 1 Studio NieR: Automata diorama statue of 2B, 9S, and A2, have been released.
Later on at Aniplex Online Fest 2022, it was confirmed that A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, 86) is animating the upcoming NieR: Automata anime with direction by Ryouji Masuyama (Blend S), character design by Jun Nakai (GATE, Silver Spoon), and music by MONACA (Bakemonogatari, Summertime Render).
Some of the voice cast was also revealed. Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan) is 2B, Natsuki Hanae (Vanitas from The Case Study of Vanitas) is 9S, Hiroki Yasumoto is Pod 042 (Yasutora Sado from Bleach), and Kaoru Akiyama (Piana from the Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland game) is Pod 153.
NieR: Automata Anime Release Date
It was confirmed by Aniplex during a live event that the NieR: Automata anime is releasing on January 7, 2023 as part of the Winter 2023 anime season. It is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
