At the second Gundam Conference, three new Gundam anime projects, a movie, a special, and an anime, were announced. All of these new projects are expected to release in 2022 at to be determined dates. To see all of the anime that’s been confirmed for 2022 so far, check out the 2022 anime schedule.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island Movie
The first project is a movie titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, which is a name we already know thanks to the 15th episode of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979). It is a retelling of the 15th episode in Mobile Suit Gundam.
After a secret mission goes awry, Mobile Suit pilot Amuro Ray and his comrades crash-land on an island. They were sent to this land—known as the Island of No Return—to clear off any enemy forces, only to find a group of children and an enemy mecha attack. Now Amuro must find a way for them all to escape this mysterious land, but not before meeting a strange man—Cucuruz Doan.
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who’s worked as a character designer and director on multiple Mobile Suit Gundam projects, including Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta Gundam, is directing the movie. You may also know him as the mangaka behind the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga series.
It is releasing on June 3, 2022 in Japan with a screen time of 1hr 48min. Crunchyroll is bringing Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island to select theaters in the United Kingdom on September 21 and 22, the United States on September 27 and 28, Canada on September 29 and October 1, and Australia on September 29.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Anime
The second project is a new anime called Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Later on, a scheduled release date of October 2022 was revealed; However, the first episode, which is titled “PROLOGUE”, will be airing ahead of the series in the Summer of 2022.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is the first new Gundam anime to release in seven years and it is the first to have a female lead. Suletta Mercury pilots a new Gundam called the Gundam Aerial. Two other mobile suits from the upcoming anime, the Gundam Lfrith and Berguir-Beu, have also been revealed.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury follows Suletta, who lives in A.S. (Ad Stella) 122, a time when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. She transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, which is run by the Beneritt Group that dominates the mobile suit industry.
Animating the series is Sunrise (Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans). Also working on the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury anime is Hiroshi Kobayashi, who worked on Hisone to Maso-tan, and script writer Ichiro Okouchi, who wrote the script for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, episodes 1-10 of Devilman Crybaby and more.

Special Edition of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
And finally, the third project that was revealed is a 9-part special edition of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans that compiles the series and is set to broadcast in Japan in the Spring of 2022. It is set to release around the same time as the upcoming smartphone app, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans G. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is one of our favorite mecha anime that’s currently streaming on Netflix, so we are looking forward to this special edition release.
